چکیده

The Arctic and sub-Arctic environments have seen a rapid growth of shrub vegetation at the expense of the Arctic tundra in recent decades. In order to develop better tools to assess and understand this phenomenon, the sensitivity of multi-polarized SAR backscattering at C and X band to shrub density and height is studied under various conditions. RADARSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X images were acquired from November 2011 to March 2012 over the Umiujaq community in northern Quebec (56.55◦N, 76.55◦W) and compared to in situ measurements of shrub vegetation density and height collected during the summer of 2009. The results show that σ is sensitive to changes in shrub coverage up to 20% and is sensitive to changes in shrub height up to around 1 m. The cross-polarized backscattering (σHV ) displays the best sensitivity to both shrub height and density, and RADARSAT-2 is more sensitive to shrub height, as TerraSAR-X tends to saturate more rapidly with increasing volume scattering from the shrub branches. These results demonstrate that SAR data could provide essential information, not only on Remote Sens. 2015, 7 9411 the spatial expansion of shrub vegetation, but also on its vertical growth, especially at early stages of colonization.

Land Cover Classification in SubArctic Regions Using Fully Polarimetric RADARSAT-2 Data

The expansion of shrub vegetation in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments observed in the past decades can have significant effects on northern ecosystems. There is a need for efficient tools to monitor those changes, not only in terms of the spatial coverage of shrubs, but also their vertical growth. The objective of the current paper is to evaluate the performance of polarimetric C-band SAR dat...

The Extended Sub-look Analysis In Polarimetric SAR Data For Ship Detection

The monitoring of maritime areas with remote sensing is essential for security reasons and also for the conservation of environment. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can play an important role in this matter by considering the possibility of acquiring high-resolution images at nighttime and under cloud cover. Recently, the new approaches based on the sub-look analysis for preserving the infor...

Monitoring of ice growth on the East channel and on shallow lakes in the Mackenzie Delta

The global warming has a substantial impact on the local geomorphological system of the arctic environment. Earth observation data has the capacity to provide accurate high resolution information. Due to the all-weather and day and night observation capability Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) are particularly well suited for the mapping and monitoring of arctic and isolated environments. This pa...

Combining Research and Education: Bioclimatic Zonation along a Canadian Arctic Transect

Scientists and students from five countries combined research and education in an investigation of bioclimatic zonation along a Canadian Arctic transect, from Amund Ringnes Island and Ellesmere Island in the north to the Daring Lake research camp at the southern edge of the tundra in Nunavut. We addressed three important needs in Arctic science: 1) to integrate education and research, 2) to pro...

X-, C-, and L-band SAR signatures of newly formed sea ice in Arctic leads during winter and spring

We examine an extensive synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data set from the Arctic Ocean spanning a time period from January to June 2015, with the aim of identifying multi-polarization parameters that can be used to accurately separate newly formed sea ice from the surroundings. Newly formed sea ice areas both provide favourable routing for ship traffic, and are key to Arctic climate science beca...
